Polyurethane

Polyurethanes are chemically similar to polyesters, with the main difference lying in the curing agents used. Urethane powders offer a smooth finish and are highly valued for their excellent exterior durability, as well as their impressive chemical and corrosion resistance. These qualities make them particularly suitable for applications such as fuel tanks, agricultural equipment, air conditioners, car rims, and doorknobs. Urethane coatings are often used on doorknobs, oven knobs, and similar items because fingerprints are less visible on their surface.

One drawback of urethane paint is that, at higher thicknesses, it can start to release gases and become brittle. During application and cure, there may be a noticeable odor, and smoke can be generated in the oven during the curing process. Therefore, it is important to closely monitor application and cure parameters when working with urethane powders. Additionally, urethane powders tend to be more expensive than other types of powders due to the higher cost of the resin used in their formulation.
