Epoxy - Polyester Hybrid

Hybrid epoxy-polyester coatings are commonly used as general-purpose powder coatings with limited exposure to sunlight. They offer excellent hardness and provide the best chemical and corrosion resistance among available powder coatings. One advantage of hybrid powders is their ease of application and the availability of a wide range of cure schedules. Similar to epoxies, they exhibit strong adhesion to metal surfaces, especially when accompanied by proper pre-treatments like phosphate coating and sandblasting.

However, a drawback of hybrid epoxy-polyester powders is their limited resistance to UV radiation. When exposed to exterior conditions, they can fade and chalk under sunlight, and their surface may start to degrade after a few months. As a result, these coatings are better suited for indoor applications. It's worth noting that many primers utilize epoxy formulations due to their strong adhesion and rust resistance. Since they are not well-suited to withstand weathering conditions, they are often used as a pre-coat underneath another type of powder coating, allowing their strengths to be leveraged while compensating for their weaknesses.
